Cardboard Roman Street

In all of my work I try to come up with the simplest way to create the most effective results. This basic idea can be used for all sorts of ‘streets’ from different periods in history or based on locations from a huge range of stories. Using different thicknesses and types of cardboard allows you to create convincing textures and when painted they can really make a difference to the overall effect. This is also a great way of creating a ‘team’ project where children can create the buildings individually or in small teams and then bring them back to reassemble as a whole piece for display. It also gives them ‘ownership’ of their street, bringing it to life and making it easier to engage them in discussion or written work exploring the history or everyday lives of the people that inhabit it. They care about it, because they’ve built it.
